However, it also was the result of an ancient interaction between Greeks and Persians. In 500 BC C. the Persian Empire was still relatively young and expansionist, but vulnerable to revolts among his subjects. As if that were not enough, the Persian king Darius was a usurper, and had to extinguish many revolts against his rule. Prior to the Ionian Revolt, Darius began to expand the Empire in Europe, forcing subduing Thrace and Macedonia to become his ally.
